Community Champions During Retirement
Meet Jeannie and Michael Overbye, a South Carolina couple, working to help communities in need.
Everyday Heroes find time to help make a positive impact. They are inspirational in their quest to make the world just a little bit better. Jeannie and Michael are now retired, but they tapped their Inner Philanthropist and found a way to give back. Following their move from their home of many years in Connecticut, NY to their new retirement home in SC, they have been volunteering weekly over the last 3 years at the Community Kitchen, a nonprofit organization in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, that serves meals to those in need.
Everyday Heroes origin stories frequently predict the future. Jeannie was a Registered Nurse for many decades and she particularly enjoyed teaching the younger nurses how to be the best nurses to their patients. Michael was an adult education High School Science Teacher. This school served adults who came to the school with aspirations of getting high school degrees they were unable to get sooner based on a myriad of negative life circumstances including but not limited to poverty, dysfunctional/ abusive family life and addiction. Michael frequently saw the needs of his students, beyond education and always wanted to do more.
Jeannie and Michael work to fill the food deficit in their area by helping to mitigate the waste that is created within the food industry. Michael drives a truck and picks up the surplus food from surrounding supermarkets each week and transfers this to Community Kitchen. Jeannie helps to prepare and turn that food into hot cooked meals in order to put it into the mouths of those individuals and families in need of this essential basic need in the community.
Jeannie and Michael feel good providing basic human needs like food to those who need it and they make an effort every week to help people feel respected, loved, and valued.
These committed Philanthropists, understand how these small moments of giving back can help change the world.
