What happens when you trade the abstract dream of “doing good someday” for concrete action today?
In the latest episode of Your Impact Unleashed, host Mandy Blake German and youth co-host Eduardo Lie sat down with retired market research professional, global volunteer, and board member Amy O’Connell. Together, they explored the deeply infectious joy of everyday philanthropy, the ripple effects of community-driven initiatives, and what it truly means to be a “helper.”
If you missed the conversation, or just want to sit with its beautifully grounding takeaways, here is a breakdown of the heart and soul of the episode.
The Anatomy of a Ripple Effect: Amani Partners Kenya
Amy’s most extensive volunteer work is with Amani Partners Kenya (“Amani” means peace in Swahili). The story of how this organization grew is a textbook example of the “ripple effect” of philanthropy that Defeat the Streets loves to champion.
- The Spark (2000): A Kenyan minister, Reverend Peter Meetto, visited Indiana and shared stories of growing up in a village with absolutely no access to books or reading materials.
- The First Ripple: Inspired by his words, a group of high school students at the Signature School in Indiana raised money to build a small reading center and library in his home village.
- The Wave: Over the years, traveling teams of U.S. medical volunteers began using that very same reading center to host bi-annual medical camps.
- The Lasting Impact: This work inspired further fundraising, culminating in the construction of a permanent, year-round health center on the property, which officially opened its doors in 2022.
Amy took her first volunteer trip to Kenya in 2017. The experience left such a profound mark on her that she has returned eight more times since, witnessing firsthand how a single story told in Indiana transformed healthcare access for thousands of families a world away.
Fighting Inertia: “What’s Stopping You?”
One of the most relatable moments of the episode occurred when Amy discussed the hurdles she faced in her philanthropy journey. Surprisingly, the biggest obstacle wasn’t funding or logistics—it was inertia.
“Inertia can be a killer of dreams,” Amy shared. “It’s one thing to decide you want to do something; it’s another to proactively take the steps to pursue your goal.”
For years, Amy had told family and friends that she wanted to volunteer internationally “someday.” It wasn’t until one of her sons looked at her and asked point-blank, “What’s stopping you?” that the abstract dream became reality. She realized the only barrier holding her back was herself. She dove into research, started making phone calls, and hasn’t looked back.
What is an Everyday Hero?
Borrowing a philosophy from the iconic Fred Rogers, Amy defines an everyday hero simply as a helper.
A helper is anyone who possesses an outward focus toward the world and a keen, empathetic awareness of their surroundings. Eduardo added to this sentiment by honoring his own grandmother—a woman who had very little financial wealth but constantly cooked for neighbors and tutored neighborhood children for free, proving that generosity is entirely about willingness, not wealth.
Ultimately, Amy dropped a beautiful truth that long-term volunteers know well: Volunteering is a positive addiction. You always receive far more joy, connection, and personal fulfillment from the experience than what you originally set out to give.
The Daily Gratitude Challenge
Amy left the Defeat the Streets community with a brilliant, actionable challenge to practice at the end of every single day. Ask yourself this fill-in-the-blank question:
“Today was a good day because _________________.”
Some days, the answers will flow easily and abundantly. Other days, when times are tough, it might feel like a struggle to find even one thing. But practicing this daily reflection strengthens your gratitude muscle, expands your awareness of the good around you, and ultimately inspires you to go out and help others feel the same way.
As Amy’s personal mantra goes: “Life is short. Jump in.” Don’t wait for the perfect moment to become a helper. Find what you love to do, look around your community (or the world), and take that very first step.
