A Heartbeat in South Strand: Spreading Love One Song at a Time

Sometimes the most meaningful impact begins with the simplest spark — even a scroll through a Facebook feed. For Jeannie Overbye, Defeat the Streets’ South Carolina Ambassador, one post led to a powerful connection with the South Strand Volunteer Angels, a group known for showing up again and again for local, community-driven needs.

This February, Jeannie joined the Angels on a special visit to a local nursing home with one heartfelt purpose: to make sure no resident felt forgotten during the season of love.

And what followed was a beautiful mix of warmth, color, and music — the kind of afternoon that lingers.

Handmade Heartbeats
The team delivered personalized Valentine’s Day cards to residents — small tokens that carried a big message: You matter. You’re remembered.

Melodies of Joy
Songs filled the hallways, drawing smiles, gentle laughter, and even a few tapping toes — proof that joy doesn’t need much to return.

The Gift of Listening
Most meaningful of all, the volunteers offered their time and attention. For many residents who rarely receive visitors, being truly seen and heard was the greatest gift. Faces brightened as stories poured out — memories of years gone by, shared with someone willing to pause and listen.

For Jeannie, the experience was a powerful reminder of what Defeat the Streets stands for: taking even a small amount of time to help someone feel less alone. She shared how moving it was to witness the residents’ happiness — and how quickly simple gestures became something deeply personal.

In her own words, Jeannie reflected:

“It was a very rewarding experience to spend time with this lovely group of seniors. They truly love sharing their own stories, and it’s an honor to be the ones there to hear them.”

This South Carolina volunteerism initiative is a reminder that connecting with our elders isn’t just an act of charity — it’s community. It’s compassion in real time. And it’s recognizing that sometimes the “angels” we’re looking for are already right here in our own backyard.
