At Defeat the Streets, we believe that every person has a unique purpose, often forged in the very challenges they’ve overcome. This is the heart of our Everyday Heroes program, and there is no better example of this than Kenneth “Kenny” Joyner.
From Survival to Significance
Kenny’s story didn’t begin with ease; it began in survival. Growing up in a rough neighborhood in Washington D.C. without a father, he faced a landscape of trauma and instability. Living in a constant state of “survival mode,” he witnessed domestic violence and obstacles that could have easily trapped him in a cycle of pain.
However, Kenny chose a different path, guided by the “beautiful, phenomenal, strong women” in his family and the steady presence of his grandfather. He reached a profound realization that would define his life’s work: “Nothing is wasted in our lives”. Instead of becoming a taker or an abuser, Kenny decided he would be the person who brings hope.
A “Surgical Heart” for the Community
Today, Kenny serves as the founder and CEO of Boys With a Purpose, using his personal history as a roadmap for the next generation. His mission is deeply personal, rooted in his own journey from “fear to faith”. He understands the invisible struggles young men face because he lived them.
Through his nonprofit, Kenny provides what he calls a “surgical heart”—a precise, intentional approach to healing and empowerment. His work focuses on three pillars of transformation:
- Empowering Productivity: He teaches young men how to transition from simply existing to becoming effective, contributing citizens.
- Imparting Wisdom: By sharing the life lessons from his book, Without A Father, From Fear to Faith, he provides youth with a compass to navigate a world that often feels stacked against them.
- Leading by Example: Kenny proves that your destination is not determined by your starting point, but by your character and commitment to others.
Creating a Culture of Care
By providing models of purpose and character, Kenny is doing more than helping individual boys; he is strengthening the entire fabric of our society. He is a living reminder that one person’s decision to care can create a ripple effect of change that lasts for generations.
As Kenny says, “When the heart and the mind agree, everything is possible”. At Defeat the Streets, we invite you to take a page from Kenny’s book. Look for ways to be the “divine intervention” someone else might be waiting for—because when we choose to care, we all become heroes.
