At Defeat the Streets, we celebrate everyday people who turn compassion into action—and this month, we’re proud to shine a light on Tara Denning, a DTS team member in Delaware whose volunteer work with Humane Animal Partners is changing lives one wagging tail at a time.
For the past few years, Tara has been a dedicated volunteer with the organization, participating in adoption “meet and greet” events and fostering dogs whenever she’s not traveling for work. Her goal is simple yet profound: to help animals find loving, permanent homes.
“I love speaking to the public about our programs,” Tara says. “But the best part is connecting adoptable pups with families who fall in love with them.”
At an October event at Petco, Tara spent the afternoon introducing two adoptable dogs to visitors—answering questions, sharing their personalities, and helping people imagine what it might be like to welcome a new companion into their home. One couple she met that day returned to the shelter later that week and adopted one of the dogs she showcased.
“That’s the part that stays with you,” she says. “Knowing you helped a dog find its place in the world.”
Beyond events, Tara also fosters dogs in her home, giving them safety, stability, and love while they wait for adoption. It’s deeply rewarding work—and a reminder that volunteerism shows up in countless forms, from large-scale efforts to small, consistent acts of care.
Tara embodies what Defeat the Streets stands for: making philanthropy personal, hands-on, and rooted in kindness. We are honored to have her as part of our team and grateful for the light she brings to her community—both human and canine.
